The Goa State Museum or State Archeology Museum, Panaji is the most important museum in the Indian state of Goa . It presents exhibits on the medieval, Portuguese and more recent epochs of the region; some objects also come from other regions of India.

location

The museum is located in the EDC Complex in Patto, an eastern district of the capital Panaji .

history

The Goa State Museum was founded in 1973 but didn't open to visitors until four years later. In 1996 a new building was built.

Departments

The museum, which has around 9000 exhibits, consists of a total of 14 departments: Sculpture Gallery , Christian Art Gallery , Printing History Gallery , Banerji Art Gallery , Religious Expression Gallery , Cultural Anthropology , Contemporary Art Gallery , Numismatics Gallery , Goa's Freedom Struggle Gallery , Menezes Braganza Gallery , Furniture Gallery , Natural Heritage of Goa Gallery , Environment & Development Gallery and the Geology Gallery .

The most original exhibits are certainly the images and statues of saints in the Christian art room. In the gallery for contemporary art there are two lottery machines with over 1000 balls, which were first put into operation in 1947.
