Gockinga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gockinga were an influential family from Groningen who originally came from Oldambt .

It was first mentioned in 1398 when Tamme Gockinga was enfeoffed with Oldambt and was commissioned to build a castle in Zuidbroek . As Lords of Olambt, they quickly came into conflict with the ambitions of the city of Groningen . In the disputes with the city in 1401 the Gockingaborg was devastated. The head of the family at that time, Eelt Gockinga, was captured here and held until the year 1405. Eelt's son Eppo Gockinga married Frouwa, the sister of Ullrich Cirksena , who later became Count of East Frisia.

The name Gockinga reappeared during the 17th century. Members of the Bauckens family bore this name; without a derivation from the Gockingas could be established. A sideline of the Bauckens also continued the Gockinga name. Members of this sat in the government of the city of Groningen in the 17th century. In the years 1817 and 1906 there were elevations to the nobility.
