The Goeppert-Mayer (abbreviation: GM ) is a non- SI unit for the two-photon cross-section of a material.
A cross section of 1 GM means that with a photon flux of 1 photon per second and cm 2 in a material with a density of 1 molecule per cm 3 one of photons is absorbed over a distance of 1 cm .
The Goeppert-Mayer is named after the physicist Maria Goeppert-Mayer , who theoretically investigated two-photon scattering in her dissertation.
