Going to the Match is a 1953 oil painting by Lawrence Stephen Lowry . It shows a crowd of people on their way to Burnden Park Stadium in Bolton. The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) bought the painting for a record £ 1,926,500 at a campaign by Sotheby’s auction house in London in 1999 . The price was astonishing as the expected purchase price was only £ 500,000. This made Going to the match the most expensive painting of modern British painting to date. The picture has been on loan at The Lowry Center in Manchester since it was sold to the PFA .
