Golden Mile (Rhineland-Palatinate)
The fertile plain to the left of the Rhine between Bad Breisig and Remagen is known as the Golden Mile . The term "golden" comes from the fertility of the soil in this area.
In this section of the Rhine Valley, German soldiers were held prisoner in the open air by the US forces in the Remagen and Sinzig prisoner-of-war camps in the spring of 1945.
In 1972 the planned construction of a nuclear power plant in the greater Koblenz area became known, and the Golden Mile between Bad Breisig and Sinzig was named as one of the possible locations. For reasons of drinking water protection, however, this plan had to be abandoned later, and the Mülheim-Kärlich nuclear power plant was implemented instead .
