The Casco de Leiro helmet is a ritual hat from the late Bronze Age , probably around the year 1000 BC. Dated.

The gold object was made from a single cast blank. Horizontal ribbon decorations were then driven into the entire surface . The height is 15 cm with the tip (2.3 cm), the diameter 19.5 cm and it has a weight of 270 grams. The type of decoration is very similar to the golden hats of the Schifferstadt type found in Central Europe from the Bronze Age . The concentric circles, for example, are interpreted as symbols of the sun . A comprehensive analysis of the possible significance of the decorations has not yet been carried out (2003).

He was found on April 7, 1976 on the beach in the municipality of Leiro ( Rianxo ), in the province of A Coruña , Galicia , Spain . That day the local fisherman JMª Vicente Somoza wanted to build a new boat shed. While straightening the ground, he destroyed the clay pot in which the hat was. He immediately reported his find to the local authorities. Today it can be seen in the “Arqueológico e Histórico” museum in A Coruña .
