Golf in the year 2000

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Golf in the Year 2000, or, What We Are Coming To is a novel by Scottish author and golf enthusiast J. McCullough , who wasfirst published in 1892 under the pseudonym JACK, andwho also wrote an introduction to the art of golf. The novel tells a classic early journey through time, during which the protagonist wakes up in the future after a long sleep or coma-like state.

action

The golfer Alexander J. Gibson fell into a kind of deep sleep after a moderate game in 1892 and woke up in 2000 in a facility reminiscent of a coffin. He meets the resident of the house, who also turns out to be a passionate golfer and demonstrates the achievements of the year 2000 in terms of technology and golf. In Gibson's future, golf is the most important occupation for men; Government and administrative business is largely left to women, who dress like men and are difficult for Gibson to recognize at first.

Predictions

Some of the predictions in the novel are surprisingly correct, which is why McCullough has been referred to as a kind of "second nostradamus". In the year 2000 of the novel, for example, there were digital clocks and a type of television realized via mirrors. Equality for women is also predicted; however, women do not seem to play a role in the (central) golf scene of this utopia. In the field of golf, the international team championships introduced in 1927 and the automatic caddies introduced in the 80s were predicted. Some readers also find it difficult to believe that the text was actually written as early as 1892.

expenditure

The book was published in London in 1892 and reprinted in 1998 by Rutledge Hill Press .
