Google Profile is an online service of the US company Google Inc. that enables users to publish a personal profile page . The publication requires a user account with the provider.

history

Google Profile was created on April 22nd, 2009, initially as a way for US GoogleMail users to store their own profile, which Google prefers to find and display. The basic idea was that users should be given the opportunity to consciously design their own image on the Internet by giving Google a desired page.

In competition with Facebook and Twitter , the Google Group tried to increase the number of users of Google Profiles in late 2010 by allegedly linking the use of the popular Picasa web album to creating a Google profile, if possible. The procedure is now more moderate. Picasa Web Albums can still be used without Google Profiles as before.

The Google Group remains true to the basic concept of Google Profile of designing its own public homepage without having to do the layout work of a classic homepage. To make this concept stand out more clearly, the previous option of creating a “private profile” is no longer offered for new registrations since March 17th, 2011. Since then, newcomers to Google Profile have always started directly with a public profile, whereby an option can still be set whether this website is indexed by search services such as Google .

Older Google Profile users who have previously used their profile with the private option have until July 30, 2011 to decide whether they want to change their profile to a public profile. If the settings are not changed, all profiles with the Private option will be deleted on August 1st, 2011 in order to maintain a uniform status.

Some new Google services such as Google Buzz , Google +1 and Google+ can only be used with a public Google profile. In the course of Google+, Google Profile is getting a significant upgrade with new functions and setting options (see next subsection).

Range of functions

The range of functions of Google Profile is quite clear and easy to configure, but this is not immediately apparent to the typical user because the login page hardly contains any text and all the essential service descriptions are on the help pages. The Buzz or Picasa tabs can be shown or hidden.

The scope of the profile depends on whether the user access is without or combined with Google+ :

  • With no Google+, the options of Google Profile are very strict: Either public or omit. There is no differentiation between a profile picture for private friends and a profile picture for the public. In these cases, Google suggests getting a second Google account.
  • As soon as the account is combined with Google+, there is, in addition to either public or omit, the third option only for members of his group. There is no fourth option in visibility for certain circles. For this fourth case, Google recommends adding a second account, which can be managed together more quickly and conveniently using the new Google+ bar . There is a separate Google+ profile help page for the extended range of functions.

By default, the Google Profile page does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the Google username or Gmail address. A contact form can optionally be displayed for making contact.

The most important settings can also be checked centrally in the Google Dashboard .
