Gorowa (people)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gorowa (also Goroa , Gorwa or Gorwaa ) are an ethnic group that lives in northern Tanzania in the area of Babati and Mount Fiome or Ufiome. After the mountain, the Gorowa are also called Fiome or Wafiome . The Gorowa language, Gorowa , is a South Cushitic language and is most closely related to the language of neighboring Iraqw . Iraqw and Gorowa have close ties - the Iraqw exchanging corn for hardware from the Gorowa - and they can communicate with one another, but consider each other to be two different groups. Roland Kießling estimated the number of Gorowa in 1999 at around 50,000.
