meaning

Special achievements against conflicts, violence and escalations are honored. The award was brought to life by the Friends of Dresden Germany association founded in Dresden in 2009. This is an offshoot of the US Friends of Dresden Inc. in New York , which was founded by Günter Blobel . The prize is donated by the Klaus Tschira Foundation . It is endowed with 10,000 euros. The winners will receive a 30 cm high bronze figure, which was designed by Konstanze Feindt Eißner and is based on the figure "Ernst" of the Dresden Mozart fountain in the Bürgerwiese . The war damage suffered by the original figure, which is exhibited today in the Dresden Lapidarium, can also be seen in the award sculpture.

According to the organizer, the award is also intended to counteract the appropriation of the Dresden Memorial Day by right-wing extremists. The first award ceremony in 2010 was postponed by one day for security reasons at the request of the Saxon Ministry of the Interior and took place at a ceremony in the Semperoper . In the following years the winners, Daniel Barenboim and James Nachtwey , were also honored in the Semperoper on February 13th.
