Babati (also called Babati Town ) is a city in Tanzania , capital of the district of the same name and capital of the Manyara region .

geography

The city has 93,108 inhabitants (as of 2012) and is around 170 kilometers south of the city of Arusha , on the north bank of Lake Babati . The Hanang , the fourth highest mountain in Tanzania, is 25 kilometers southwest of the city.

Babati is 1348 meters above sea level. The climate is warm and temperate, Cwb according to the effective climate classification . Outside the dry season from June to September, it rains around 100 millimeters per month with a peak in March / April. The average temperature is 20.2 degrees Celsius.

history

Allegedly the name is based on a misunderstanding. When a European asked a boy the name of the village, the boy did not understand the question. He said the stranger had asked him about his father. He pointed to one of the men and replied, “Baba ti”, which means “my father”.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main economic activities are agriculture and trade.

  • Agriculture: More than half of the working population worked in their own agriculture, around a fifth were self-employed elsewhere and 15 percent were employed (as of 2012).
  • Roads: Babati lies at the junction of the national road T5 from Dodoma in the south to Arusha in the north with the national road T14 to Singida in the west.
