Babati is a district of the Manyara region in Tanzania , its administrative center is in the city of Babati , which is also the regional capital. The district is bordered by the Arusha region to the north and northeast, the Simanjiro district to the east, the Dodoma region to the south, the Hanang district to the southwest and the Mbulu district to the northwest .

Babati has an area of ​​6069 square kilometers and 400,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The district stretches from Lake Manyara in the north, which is 960 meters above sea level, to Lake Babati in the south. In the west, a mountain range over 2000 meters high delimits the district, to the east a flat highland spreads out, broken through by the 2416 meter high mountain Kwaraha east of the district capital. The drainage takes place in lakes and swamps with no outflow. The climate in Babati is temperate warm, Cwb according to the effective climate classification . The rainfall falls in two rainy seasons, short rain showers from October to December and more extensive rain from February to May. The dry season lasts from June to September. The annual precipitation depends strongly on the topographical location and ranges from 500 to 2000 millimeters. The temperature also depends on the location and has a wide range from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius, with September to November being the hottest.

In 1985 the Hanang District was split up, and the Babati District emerged from the eastern part. The division into the two constituencies (councils) Babati City Council and Babati District Council took place in 2004.

The population of Babati rose from 302,253 in 2002 to 405,500 in 2012. The increase in the city with an annual growth of one percent was significantly lower than in the country, where the population increased by three percent annually. In 2012, around sixty percent of those aged five and over spoke Swahili, ten percent in rural areas and twenty percent in cities spoke Swahili and English. The illiteracy rate in rural areas was 25 percent, ten percent higher than in cities.

  • Education: The city of Babati is well supplied with forty elementary schools, fifteen secondary schools, two colleges and one university. The District Council has 143 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools.
  • Health: There are two hospitals, eight health centers and 36 pharmacies in the district for the medical care of the population.

Economy and Infrastructure

The most important branch of the economy is agriculture, but people also work in trade and in the processing of agricultural products.

  • Agriculture: The soils in Babati are fertile, with sunflowers, beans, peas, corn, lentils, mangoes and sesame seeds being the most common. Most of the livestock are cattle, poultry and goats (as of 2012).
  • Trade, industries: In 2019 there were 14 factories that mainly processed the agricultural products rice, sugar, honey and produced sunflower oil.
  • Roads: The T5 national road from Dodoma to Arusha runs through the district from south to north . In the town of Babati, the T14 national road branches off from here to the southwest to Singida .

  • Tarangire National Park : The southeast of the district includes the 2850 square kilometers Tarangire National Park. The main attraction are the 3000 elephants in the park, up to 300 gather at a watering hole in the dry season. In addition to the large animals, 550 species of birds live mainly in the swamps.
  • Lake Manyara National Park : In the north, Babati is part of the 648 square kilometer national park on Lake Manyara. The center of the park is Lake Natron with its bird life, of which the flamingos are best known. But there are also dense forests that stretch up the slopes and are inhabited by tree-climbing lions.
