Simanjiro is a district in the Tanzanian region of Manyara with the administrative center in Orkesumet . The district is bordered by the Arusha region to the north, the Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions to the east, the Kiteto district to the south, and the Dodoma region and Babati district to the west .

geography

The district has a size of 19,941 square kilometers and 178,693 inhabitants (as of 2012). It largely consists of a high plateau around 1000 meters above sea level. In the east, mountains rise up to 2000 meters before the terrain drops steeply to the valley of the Pangani River. In the northeastern part of the district the river to the Nyumba ya Mungu Reservoir is dammed. There are two rainy seasons, one from November to December and the second from March to May. A total of 400 to 500 millimeters of precipitation fall each year.

The Simanjiro District was founded in 1993 when it was separated from the Kiteto District.

The area is mainly inhabited by Bantu and Nilots . The literacy rate in 2012 was 61 percent, 69 percent for men and 53 percent for women.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 79 elementary schools and 17 high schools in the district.
  • Health: There are three health centers and forty pharmacies, 29 of which are state-owned, available for medical care for the population (as of 2018).

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2012, 55 percent of the population over ten years of age were employed, 26 percent worked in the household, 10 percent went to school, five percent were unemployed and four percent were unable to work. More than half of the households had a radio, 11 percent a TV, two thirds a mobile phone and three percent a car.

  • Agriculture: Agriculture and animal husbandry are the main economic activities. Mainly vegetables, rice, corn and beans are grown. 95 percent of rural households also have farm animals, the most common being goats and cattle.
  • Commercial: There are 421 companies in the district, mainly small and micro companies (as of 2018).
  • There is fishing in Nyumba ya Mungu reservoir.
  • Mining: Tanzanite has been mined in Merelani since 1967.

In the westernmost part of the district, Simanjiro is part of the Tarangire National Park .
