In medical circles, a foreign body made of cotton that is left behind after surgical procedures is called a gossypiboma .

The term gossypibom is made up of “gossypium” ( Latin : cotton) and “boma” ( Swahili : hiding place). Foreign objects made of cotton (or other materials) are considered a rare complication after surgical procedures. In most cases, gossypibomas trigger foreign body reactions in the patient's body .
