Goyo Montero Morell (* 1975 in Madrid , Spain ) is a Spanish ballet dancer, ballet director and choreographer .

Life

Goyo Montero was born in Madrid in 1975. He completed his training first with Carmen Roche and then at the Royal Conservatory of Professional Dance in Madrid and at the School of the Cuban National Ballet. As a dancer he was awarded the Prix ​​de Lausanne in 1993 as well as the gold medal and the Grand Prize at the Luxembourg International Ballet Competition. Critics of Dance Europe Magazine nominated him as the best dancer of the 2003/2004 season.

Goyo Montero was principal soloist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and soloist at the Leipzig Opera , the Wiesbaden State Theater and the Royal Ballet of Flanders. As a guest soloist he was a. a. invited by the Mexican National Ballet, the Perth City Ballet and the Ballet d'Europe to collaborate.

As a choreographer he created a. a. Works for Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, São Paulo Companhia de Dança, Royal Ballet London, Zurich Ballet , Perm Opera Ballet / Diana Vishneva Context Festival, National Ballet Sodre, Maggio Danza, Compañia Nacional de Danza, Acosta Danza, Deutsche Oper Berlin , Oper Kiel , Ankara and Izmir State Ballet, Modern Dance Turkey, Company Gregor Seyffert, Ballet Carmen Roche, National Ballet of Cuba, and Ballet de Teatres de la Generalitat Valenciana.

Goyo Montero has been invited to various international festivals with his choreographies. a. to the 20th Havana International Ballet Festival, the 71st Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Granada International Dance and Music Festival, the Expo Zaragoza, the Festival Veranos de la Villa Madrid, the Expo Aichi in Japan, the Diana Vishnevas Context Festival in Russia and the Netherlands Dance festival.

Goyo Montero's choreography "Imponderable" for Acosta Danza was premiered in September 2017 at Sadler's Wells Theater in London and has been on tour around the world in the company's program since then. Montero's piece "Asunder", commissioned by Diana Vishnevas Context Festival, was presented in November 2017 at the Stanislavski Theater Moscow, the Marinsky Theater St. Petersburg and at Sadler's Wells London. In addition, “Asunder” received a nomination for the Russian “Golden Mask Award” in the category “Best Choreography” in 2019.

Goyo Montero has been director and chief choreographer of the State Theater Nuremberg Ballet since the 2008/2009 season . Since then, his choreographies for the Staatstheater Nürnberg Ballet have included 20 world premieres.

Since 2019 Goyo Montero has also been the resident choreographer of the Compagnie Acosta Danza.

Goyo Montero has a longstanding relationship with the Prix ​​de Lausanne : Goyo Montero was a member of the jury in 2012 and 2017, and from 2013 to 2016 his choreographies were part of the contemporary repertoire of this competition. In 2018 Goyo Montero created a new choreography entitled "Pulse" to the music of Owen Belton with 51 selected students from the partner schools of the Prix de Lausanne. Such a choreographic project was realized for the first time in the history of the Prix de Lausanne.

In 2017, Montero's works were also part of the International Ballet and Choreography Competition in Beijing, China.

Goyo Montero has received numerous awards, including a. with the “Villa de Madrid” prize, the 1st prize of the Ibero-American Choreography Competition, the “Villanueva” prize (awarded by the UNEAC Association of Cuban Authors and Journalists) and the “Teatro de Madrid” prize. Goyo Montero was awarded the culture prize of the Chamber of Commerce of the Middle Franconian Economy. The Spanish Ministry of Culture honored the choreographer and dancer Goyo Montero with the “Premio Nacional de Danza”, and Goyo Montero received the Bavarian Culture Prize. Under the direction of Goyo Montero, the State Theater Nuremberg Ballet 2018 will be awarded the “German Dance Prize ” for “outstanding development in dance”.

In international dance magazines Goyo Montero has been awarded several times both as a choreographer (including "Choreographer of the Year 2014" in Dance for You ) and for his works (nominations as best choreography, including 2008 for "Sleeping Beauty" as "best Italian production of 2008" by Danza & Danza ; for his ballet “Romeo and Juliet” with the Compañia Nacional de Danza in Dance for you   and Dance Europe (2012/2013); for “Black Bile” (2014), “Cyrano” (2015) and “Don Quijote “(2017) in Dance Europe).

In Dance Europe's "Critics' Choice" 2018, Goyo Montero was nominated as best ballet director.
