gpl-violations.org is a project founded by Harald Welte in 2004 . He wants to draw the public's attention to violations of the GNU General Public License (GPL) and the misuse of free software . In this way, copyright infringers are to be put under pressure to comply with applicable law. Users who notice violations are given the opportunity to report them via email. The project then helps to initiate appropriate steps.

Equally important, however, is their offer to provide information on how to use GPL-licensed code in commercial applications while complying with the GPL.

The project has achieved both judicial and extrajudicial successes, including several in Germany. In 2005 it got right in a Munich court when it took action against the company Fortinet after they used code from the Linux kernel for their FortiOS without meeting the requirements of the GPL. On September 6, 2006, D-Link was subject to gpl-violations.org, thereby confirming the GPL's validity under German law. In a proceeding against the company Skype , which had sold a telephone without sufficient indication of the GPL, the claim to it was confirmed in the appeal proceedings in May 2008.

From January to October 2015 the page was offline and the domain was no longer canceled. The website can now be reached again and has been online again since 2016.
