Cemetery plan

Historical plan of the Merovingian cemetery of Selzen

The cemetery plan includes the mapping of all burials in a cemetery in archeology . In a systematic excavation , the findings of each individual grave are documented as well as the topographical situation of the cemetery as a whole. Each individual burial is given a number and can therefore be clearly located within the area. The creation of a burial ground plan is standard for modern excavations of burial grounds.

In many cases, the plan enables further statements about the burial ground. By mapping dated burials or chronologically meaningful grave goods , developments over time can often be determined (occupancy chronology). In addition, distributions of very different characteristics can be checked. Mapping of anthropologically determined Bronze AgeGraves and gender-specific additions and grave customs have shown that age and gender groups can be identified within some cemeteries (Nähermemmingen, Donau-Ries district; Kronwinkel, Landshut district; Singen, Konstanz district). In the example of the Selzen cemetery shown here, the earth graves are in the north, while plate graves have only been found in the south of the necropolis.
