With an area of 1.48 hectares, it is the smallest of the three lakes on the Turracherhöhe, but it is up to 12 meters deep. The green color comes from candelabrum algae of the genus Chara on the lake bed. The slopes around the lake are occupied by larch and stone pine, the Grünsee is the most scenic of the three lakes. It is the only one of them to drain south, its water flowing over the Holzbach and the Stangenbach into the upper Gurk .
Around the lake is also a landscape protection area (LGBl. No. 78/1970, LSG.024 ) with 68.5 hectares. It is located in the biosphere reserve.
