Tomb of Thutmose

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The tomb of Thutmose is located in Saqqara and is of particular importance as Thutmosis may be the sculptor who created the bust of Nefertiti .

The grave was found on November 24, 1996 by the Mission Archéologique Française du Bubaseion under the direction of Alain-Pierre Zivie in the area of the so-called Bubasteion . It was given the number I.19. The two-part tomb is located directly next to the tomb of Maia , Tutankhamun's wet nurse . There is a decorated chapel carved into the rock and the burial chambers carved into the rock, but they are undecorated.

The grave is probably a family grave. Another person named in the decoration of the tomb is Kenana, obviously the tomb was laid out for Thutmose and Kenana, although Thutmose is clearly the more important person. He bears the title of chief draftsman . Kenana was the chief of the draftsmen at Truth Square . So he and Thutmose were colleagues.

The chapel is relatively small and measures only about 2.5 by 2 meters. In the center there is a pillar. There is a large niche in the east. The decoration of the chapel is painted and executed as a relief . In the small corridor that leads to the burial chamber, there is a picture of Osiris on the west side, while the picture of a woman has been preserved on the east side, but large parts of the image have been destroyed. These figures are carved into the stone as a relief. Next to the figure of Osiris on the west side you can see a picture of Kenana and his son Pay. The figures are only painted in black, with no interior drawing. The south wall of the burial chapel is occupied by the entrance to the chapel. On the west side of the entrance is the painted figure of Amenemwia, the father of Thutmose. On the west wall you can see Thutmose and his wife standing with a priest in front of them. The north wall of the chapel shows Osiris enthroned in a canopy on the left. On the right are two men who adore him. It may be about Thutmose and his father. The representation is designed as a relief. The entire east wall is dedicated to the Kenana family. On the left you can see Kenana and his wife. In front of them you can see different family members in two rows. Men are in the upper register and women in the lower register. The niche in the west wall is also painted. The south wall shows the two coffins of Thutmose and his wife. On the west wall you can see Itju, the couple's son. The north wall shows Kenana and his wife, the east wall a standing man.
