Gate and tholos of the tomb of Kato Phournos

The tomb of Kato Phournos ( Greek Κάτω Φούρνος = lower oven ) is called a Tholos tomb in Mycenae . The grave was named after the place of discovery of the same name and this was again named after the Tholos grave itself, which the farmers used to call Phournos ( Greek φούρνος = oven ). The Tholos tomb is located on the western slope of the Panagitsa hill about 600 m west of the upper town of Mycenae. According to Alan Wace's classification , it belongs to the second Tholos group and dates to the Late Helladic Period (SH II AB). It was built between 1460 and 1400 BC. Built in BC.

description

The partially preserved access path ( dromos ) was flanked by two walls made of hewn stone blocks. The gate and the gateway (stomion) were built from large, carefully crafted stone blocks. Very large, hewn capstones were used to cover the doorway. The similarity to the Panagia-Tholos suggests that there used to be a relief triangle above the deck beam. The dome, which has since collapsed, was about 10 meters in diameter and was built from smaller, flat stones. Since the dromos is in acute danger of collapsing and has to be supported by cross braces, the grave cannot be entered.

When the first western travelers came to Mycenae, this tomb was already known. In 1892 the Greek archaeologist Christos Tsountas carried out excavations and in 1922 Alan Wace led a new excavation campaign.
