Degree of probation
The degree of probation in critical rationalism is a measure of the severity of the tests to which a theory has been subjected. The level of probation can only increase if a test is carried out on an experiment, the outcome of which could falsify the theory . According to Popper , however, the degree of probation is not a logical probability because its properties do not agree with the axioms of the calculus of probability. Thus there is no possibility of deriving a statement about its truth from the degree of validity of a theory. According to David Miller, probation must be viewed as epistemologically completely irrelevant.
