It was founded in 2007 as part of the German government's excellence initiative . Every research project of the graduate school is based on one of the interfaces between computer science, medicine and life sciences. The doctoral student does not have a doctoral supervisor, as usual, but two supervisors for his dissertation.

The research projects are currently grouped into two branches:

  • Branch 1 - Neuroengineering, Robotics and Navigation,
  • Branch 2 - Computing in Structural and Cell Biology.

promotion

The study at the Graduate School for Computing in Medicine and Life Sciences should lead to the completion of the doctorate within 3 years. In the first two years, special courses are offered to facilitate familiarization with the doctoral topic. In addition, courses in the areas of Soft Skills and Academic Leadership Skills are completed, which are intended to facilitate career entry after graduation. In addition to the two technical supervisors, each doctoral candidate is assigned a mentor with whom non-technical questions and problems can be discussed.

structure

The graduate school is run by an academic director and a managing director and represented externally. Questions that affect the graduate school as a whole are decided by the steering committee. This consists of representatives of the school's teaching staff, representatives of the students and representatives of the university.
