The Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies , GSAPS for short, is an independent graduate school with a focus on social sciences and international relations. GSAPS was founded in April 1998 on the Waseda University campus in Tokyo. The students, faculty members and alumni come from more than 50 countries.

The facility includes the Global Institute for Asian Regional Integration, a research funding program supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT).

The GSAPS is located on the main Waseda University campus in Nishi-Waseda , Shinjuku District, Tokyo Prefecture.

Cooperating institutions

GSAPS operates a regular exchange in teaching and research with its partner institutions, u. a. from the London School of Economics , the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, National University of Singapore, Seoul National University and Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. As part of Erasmus Mundus , GSAPS is running a joint doctoral program in cooperation with the Universete Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, the University of Warwick in Great Britain, the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali in Italy, the Université de Genève in Switzerland and from Fudan University in China deals with globalization, the European Union and questions of multilateralism

GSAPS is an affiliate member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs , a network of the world's leading schools in the field of international relations and political science.

Teaching and Research

The focus of teaching and research is on East and Southeast Asian regional sciences, international relations and the study of international cooperation and politics. The school's schedule is divided into four sections, with courses being offered in both English and Japanese from May to July (spring), August (summer), September to January (autumn) and February (winter).

On May 1, 2011, 427 students were studying at GSAPS. Of these, 283 were Masters and 144 PhD students. 69.6% of the master’s students came from abroad, 30.4% from Japan. The GSAPS Student Association (GSA), the faculty's official student council, organizes regular social, academic, and career-related events.
