Graduation (language)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In linguistics, graduation refers to the linguistic possibilities of expression, to be able to ascribe gradual properties to things or facts.

A grammatical procedure for graduation is the increase of adjectives (the comparison ), for example the graduation of the beauty of an object: beautiful - more beautiful - most beautiful ( the flower is beautiful , the flower is more beautiful , etc.). In addition to the comparison, this gradual gradation can also be indicated with so-called degree adjectives or degree adverbs , for example the adverb greatly reinforces a certain property: the flower is very beautiful . Further grading words are hardly , completely or extremely , some of which can also be used as adjectives ( with extreme effort ).
