Graecostasis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Graecostasis was the meeting place of the Greek ambassadors in the Roman Forum .

It was located opposite the Hostilia Curia close to the Rostra and was probably somewhat elevated (cf. Varro 1. 1. 5, 155 and Pliny , Naturalis historia 33, 19). Pliny 's statement ( Naturalis historia 7, 212) that the noon hour had come when the sun was between Graecostasis and Rostra can be used to determine the position. It is not entirely clear whether the Graecostasis was just a kind of platform or a real structure. In the course of the reorganization of the Comitium and the relocation of the Rostra under Caesar and Augustus , the Graecostasis was dissolved.
