history

Grand Hotel 1901

After the Stockholm Exhibition in 1866 , people became aware of the inadequate hotel capacity in the Swedish capital. Jean-François Régis Cadier , a Frenchman who had lived in Sweden since 1852, was commissioned to create a large representative hotel. He chose Axel Kumlien as the architect . The first guests were received in the early summer of 1874. In 1889 the neighboring Bolinderska palatset was added to the hotel, and in 1909 the Grand Hôtel Royal with its winter garden was added .

In 1881 a travel journalist wrote in the Wiener Abendpost:

Rooms had been reserved for us in the Grand Hotel. [...] If you want, the Grand Hotel is the only palace in Stockholm. [...] The Grand Hotel with its 250 rooms (we only had two, but each had a balcony) took us in, the royally furnished dining room, whose ovens also featured at the Vienna World Exhibition, offered us an excellent supper, and the English beds and their large, long and wide blankets welcomed us and our tired limbs lovingly.

After the Second World War, Marcus Wallenberg (1899–1982) became interested in the hotel industry. In January 1968, he acquired the Grand Hotel through the Carlton Hotel, which he had already ruled. The purchase caused a sensation and caused concern among the staff as the Carlton was much smaller. However, the storm subsided when the real owner became known.
