Granius Petro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Granius Petro († around 47 BC) was a member of the Roman family of Granii and belonged to Caesar's party . According to Plutarch , Granius Petro was designated by Caesar as quaestor , but was intercepted with his ship on the coast of Africa by the Pompeians under Metellus Scipio. While all other ship travelers were treated as prisoners of war, Granius Petro should be given freedom. However, the quaestor-designate replied that it was the custom of Caesar's soldiers to give mercy but not to accept it, whereupon he stabbed himself with his sword. The ancient historian Friedrich Münzer takes the view that Granius' capture and suicide occurred in 47 BC. Could have played because of the - events of the year 46 BC. Treating - African War nothing reported about it.
