The gray mountain goat or Capra Grigia is a Swiss mountain breed of domestic goat and comes from the Ticino and southern Grisons Alpine valleys. At the end of the 1990s there were only a few gray goats left in the Misox and Calanca Valley . In 1997, the ProSpecieRara Foundation started a rescue project and brought together all the remaining gray goat lofts under the breed name Capra Grigia . These included the Livinian goat, the Blenio-Valmaggia goat and the Riviera goat. Since these goats were not taken into account in the goat breed adjustment carried out in 1938 and have not been considered native since then, ProSpecieRara submitted an application for recognition as a Swiss breed to the Federal Office for Agriculture in 2006 , which was approved in the same year.

The "Cavra del sass", as the gray goats in the Calanca Valley are called, are easy to recognize by their gray body color. The various ancestral strikes are reflected today in the various shades of gray from silver to dark gray. The color of the coat is often compared to that of broken or washed calanca granite .

With a total of around 190 recorded breeding animals (as of autumn 2007), the Capra Grigia must be classified as one of the most endangered Swiss goat breeds.
