features

Gray-backed weasel lemurs with a head body length of 21 to 24 centimeters, a tail length of around 28 centimeters and a weight of around 0.7 kilograms are among the smaller representatives of the weasel lemurs. Their fur is gray-brown on the upper side and a noticeable, dark brown eel line runs on the back . The belly and throat are light gray. The round head is colored gray, the eyes are large and the face is relatively dark.

distribution and habitat

Gray-backed weasel lemurs occur only in the region of the Sambirano River in north-western Madagascar. Since the discovery of new species of weasel lemurs in north-western Madagascar, their exact range is unclear. Their habitat are moist forests.

Way of life

Like all weasel lemurs, they are nocturnal tree dwellers. They spend the day in tree hollows or in the dense vegetation and go looking for food at dusk. Their diet consists of leaves, fruits, flowers and occasionally tree bark.

Danger

Due to the inaccuracies in the distribution area, no information can be given about the degree of endangerment of the gray-backed weasel lemur. Its main threat is probably the destruction of their habitat, with hunting to a lesser extent. The IUCN lists the species under “too little data available” ( data deficient ).
