Gray haze

The term gray veil denotes:

  • in analog photography the degree of absorption of unexposed developed film material. It is usually at an optical density between D = 0.15 and D = 0.3 (70% to 50% transmission). The causes are reflections on the separating layers between air and carrier material, scattering in the gelatin layer and remaining silver residues in the gelatin layer.
  • a type of pollution in the advertising for detergent . In the early 1970s, the detergent fact came with the slogan "Away with the gray veil!" on the market. Since all detergents now remove the dirt with almost the same success, the term "gray haze" successfully suggested residues of gray shading in the washing results of the competition.
  • Fog . In 1979, the Fehlfarben group made the term known in a line of text from their LP Monarchy and Everyday Life . "There is a gray veil over the city that my mother has not yet washed away" made the term a symbol for the "gray in people's hearts".
