Great Big Sea , GBS for short , was a Canadian folk rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador . She is known for reinterpreting old folk songs from her homeland, which has a long history.

Band history

The band was formed in 1991 with the following line-up: Alan Doyle (vocals, guitar, bouzouki , mandolin), Séan McCann (vocals, bodhrán , guitar, tin flute), Darrell Power (vocals, bass, guitar, bones) and Bob Hallett (vocals, Violin, accordion, mandolin, concertina, bouzouki, flute, bagpipes).

In 2002 Darell Power withdrew from the group to spend more time with his family. On tours GBS was supported by Kris MacFarlane (2002, drums, accordion, guitar, background vocals) and Murray Foster (2003, formerly with Moxy Frühvous) (bass, background vocals).

In 2001 GBS toured Germany as the opening act for the Oyster Band . In 2002 the band went on tour through Germany alone.

Great Big Sea won the Entertainer of the Year Award at the East Coast Music Awards from 1996 to 2001. In 2001 she decided not to take part in order to give other bands a chance. Great Big Sea has also won multiple Juno Awards , including Group of 1998 and 2005.

On December 28, 2006 the band gave a concert in St. John's , Newfoundland . This concert resulted in a proceeds of CAN $ 24,000 donated by GBS to Janeway Hospital.
