The Oysterband (originally Oyster Band ) is a British folk-rock band, formed around 1976 in Canterbury . By 2004 the band had already given over 2,300 concerts.
history
Beginnings
The band emerged from two older bands, namely the
- Whitstable Oyster Co. Ceilidh Band (founded in 1975), as well
- Fiddler's Dram , which was founded in 1973 by Daves Arbus (made famous for his work on Baba O'Riley ) and which also included Alan Prosser and Ian Telfer and later Cathy Lesurf, Chris Taylor and, from 1978, Will Ward, and the in 1979 they had a top 3 hit with Day Trip To Bangor .
They finally released their first album Jack's Alive in 1980 under the band name Oyster Ceilidh Band . Then three members left the band. Will Ward, Cathy Lesurf, who joined the Albion Band , and Chris Wood, who went to Canada and was replaced by founding member Ian Kearey.
This line-up - John Jones, Alan Prosser, Ian Telfer, Chris Taylor and Ian Kearey - released the following albums under the name The Oyster Band (sometimes the article was omitted) on their own label Pukka Music : English Rock N Roll: The Early Years 1800-1850 (1982), Lie Back and Think of England (1983), 20 Golden Tie-slackeners (1984) and Liberty Hall (1985), on which Chris Taylor is only listed as a guest (for two songs) because he left the band in 1984.
Cooking vinyl
In 1986, the band signed Russell Lax for the first time and released the very first album, Step Outside, on the newly founded Cooking vinyl label (COOK 001). Step Outside , like its predecessor Liberty Hall , contained mostly self-written titles, often with a political theme, but also several post-production of traditionals like Hal-an-Tow . In 1988 Ian Kearey left the band and was replaced by Ray "Chopper" Cooper, who first appeared on the album Ride .
In 1990 there were two special features in the Oysterband discography. In March, the band released the album Little Rock To Leipzig , the half of the studio and half live recordings existed (incl. Cover versions of Phil Ochs , The Crickets and Kay Sutcliffe) and in July came Freedom And Rain out the was recorded with June Tabor and was named one of the 10 best folk albums of the decade by Mojo Magazine. It also contained several covers by The Pogues , Richard Thompson , Billy Bragg , The Velvet Underground , Si Khan and The Albion Band .
breakthrough
The band then changed their name to Oysterband and drummer Lee Partis replaced Russell Lax in 1990. The album Deserters , which was released in 1992, also contained the song Granite Years , which was also recorded together with the Spanish band Celtas Cortos and released as a single. Celtas Cortos also released a Spanish version of this track ( Vida Gris ), which led the Oysterband two years later to record an English version of their hit 20 de Abril ( 20th of April ).
In 1993 the breakthrough came with Holy Bandits and pushed the band to the top of a booming folk-rock scene, along with groups like The Levellers . This album also contains the probably biggest hit of the oyster band When I'm Up I Can't Get Down , which was covered in 1997 by the Canadian band Great Big Sea and also became their biggest hit. (It was the only top 10 position for Great Big Sea in the Canadian singles charts to date .) In the nineties, the Oyster band increasingly took a position on political issues in their titles. In 1995, the heavier album The Shouting End of Life was created , which brought the Oyster band their first chart listing.
These two albums are now also considered folk rock classics. According to Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from Rock Hard Magazine , they are among the 25 best albums of all time, especially Holy Bandits are "the ultimate in folk rock". Rick Anderson of the Allmusicguide agrees that British folk rock can't be made better. Between these albums, the band played eleven older songs for Trawler in 1994 .
Running man
In 1996, the live CD Alive & Shouting was released on their own label Running Man Records , which was to follow Alive and Acoustic (also on Running Man ) two years later .
Deep Dark Ocean from 1997 was the last album on the Cooking vinyl label. The album, on which the band returned to a softer, more melodic sound, contains popular songs such as Little Brother , Milford Haven , Be My Luck and above all the live standard Native Son and is generally regarded as a good but not outstanding album in the making the band.
In the same year, Alan Prosser's first solo album Hall Place was released and the Oysterband recorded "Farewell to the Crown" with Chumbawamba , which was used as the B-side for the tubthumping single.
In 1998, in addition to Alive and Acoustic, the best-of compilation Pearls From The Oysters was released , which only contains songs from the albums Step Outside (1986), Wide Blue Yonder (1987), Ride (1989) and Litte Rock To Leipzig (1990) (plus two traditionals of the Gone West single (1993)).
plans label
Here I Stand from 1999 was the only regular album on the Running Man label and for the time being the last album by the Oyster band that could position itself in the charts. In Germany the album was released on the Dortmund label plans . The friendly bands Chumbawamba and Great Big Sea could be won as guests . After the more reluctant reactions to Deep Dark Ocean , the reviews were consistently excellent this time.
In 2000, three years after the separation from Cooking Vinyl, they cooperated with the label on the compilation of the comprehensive double CD Granite Years .
In 2002, Rise Above was released, which received similarly rave reviews as its predecessor. The band was assisted by "permanent temporary" member James O'Grady on five of the ten songs on the album.
Anniversary & Big Session
In June 2003 Alan Prosser released his second solo album Makerfield and on December 12, 2003 the concert took place on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the band in the Forum in London in front of about 2000 spectators, which was also released on DVD ( The 25th Anniversary Concert ). June Tabor and Chumbawamba appeared as guests. (Exactly five years later, ie on December 12th, 2008, the 30th anniversary was celebrated in the same place.)
From December 2003 to February 2004 appeared on the Running Man label the EP 25 , and the two parts of the Oyster Origins , namely Before The Flood (Best of 1980-1985), as well as a re-release of the album Twenty Golden Tie Slackeners (with the addition plus namely with two tracks from the album Jack's Alive from 1980).
From May 18-20 , 2004, The Big Session was held at Bush Hall in London with the support of June Tabor, Rose Kemp , Jim Moray, James O'Grady, Eliza Carthy & Ben Ivitsky and members of Show Of Hands and Handsome Family Volume 1 on. The idea of spontaneous jam sessions on stage with other musicians had already been tested on three major tours. A year later, from June 17 to 19, 2005, the band organized the first Big Session Festival at De Montfort Hall in Leicester , which was held there annually until 2010 (June 18 to 20).
2011 took the Big Session Festival from 19 to 21 August as part of the Beautiful Days festival at Escot Park, Devon instead and 2012 is from 15 to 17 June at the Catton Hall in Walton-on-Trent, South Derbyshire organized .
Westpark Music
With the release of The Big Session Volume 1 and the anniversary DVD in 2004, a long collaboration began with the Cologne label Westpark Music .
In 2005 John Jones, Ian Telfer and James O'Grady played on some of the songs on the Chumbawamba album A Singsong and a Scrap , and in late 2006 the Oyster band released an album on their own label called Northern Light , a live recording of an acoustic concert from 1998 to replace the older Alive and Acoustic , which they were no longer allowed to repress.
Meet You There was released in 2007 and the response has been even better than Here I Stand and Rise Above . In contrast to the previous releases, however, this time also metal magazines and webzines were sampled by the label. Although the band was able to win some fans from the metal scene over the years, the band was not prepared for the euphoria that suddenly met them from this scene.
Anniversary & solo albums
The Oxford Girl And Other Stories (2008) was released for the 30th anniversary and contained acoustic versions of old songs. It is the first album to feature new drummer Dilwyn "Dil" Davies, and it was again produced by Al Scott , who has been with the band regularly since 1993 ( Holy Bandits , Trawler , Deep Dark Ocean , Rise Above , Meet You There , 25 (EP), The 25th Anniversary Concert (DVD) and John Jones' Rising Road ).
In 2008 there was again a collaboration with Chumbawamba for "Hull or Hell" from the album The Boy Bands Have Won , for which the Oysterband contributed the vocals. In 2009 John Jones released his first solo album titled Rising Road and in 2010 Ray Cooper's solo album Tales Of Love War & Death By Hanging followed .
From February to March 2011 the band recorded the album Ragged Kingdom together with June Tabor at Rockfield Studios , the follow-up to Freedom & Rain from 1990, which was released on September 9, 2011. In Great Britain, the album was released on September 19th via Topic Records and reached number 59 on the UK charts. Ragged Kingdom was also named 2011 album of the year in the fRoots Critics Poll and Folk Album of the year in Mojo magazine. This collaboration also won four BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards , namely "Folk Singer of the Year" (June Tabor), "Best Group" (Oysterband & June Tabor), "Best Album" (Ragged Kingdom) and "Best Traditional Track "(Bonny Bunch of Roses).
In November 2012, the band announced that Ray Cooper would leave the band in February 2013 to focus on his solo career. Adrian Oxaal, former guitarist of the band James , and Al Scott, who also produced the following album Diamonds on the Water , which was released on February 17, 2014, took over his post .
