The Great Lake is a lake in the center of the Australian state of Tasmania .
It is located in the sparsely populated Central Highlands and is the second largest freshwater lake in Australia after Lake Pedder . The lake was originally much smaller; by building a dam on the southern outlet, the Shannon River , it reached its present size.
In addition to generating electricity, the lake is used for fishing, and tourism in the region is also a source of income. The Lake Highway (A5) runs along its south and west banks .
