Grecco is a town in western Uruguay .
geography
It is located in the eastern part and there in sector 8 of the Río Negro department in the Cuchilla de Navarro on the banks of the Arroyo Las Flores . The Arroyo Ramírez Chico rises to the south , while the source of the Arroyo Ramírez Grande lies in a northeastern direction. The only larger settlement in the vicinity is Baygorria in the southeast on the territory of the neighboring Durazno district .
history
In 1870, the two Italian emigrants and brothers Natalio and Juan Grecco were the first to settle here in the source area of the river. However, the former returned to his homeland in 1872. Juan Grecco, on the other hand, bought 400 hectares of land in the area and started a family there. He built his house here and ran a shop there. Over time, he divided his land holdings among his ten children. As a result, several families finally lived in the area in 1930. The establishment of a police station and a school followed. By law no. 13.299, Grecco was officially granted the status of “pueblo” (village) on February 24, 1964.
