Launch of an Athena missile at the Green River Test Site

Green River Test Site ( GRTS , also Green River Launch Complex ) is a US military missile test site southeast of the city of Green River , Utah .

In Green River, 141 Athena research missiles and Pershing I medium-range missiles were launched between 1964 and 1971 . The flights were aimed at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico . The site had three launch pads for Athena missiles. The Pershing missiles were launched from mobile launch pads. In addition to the US Army , the German Armed Forces also carried out test flights with their Pershing missiles. There have also been several accidents here in which missiles did not work properly and then crashed.

The base was dissolved and is now open to the public again. There are still several old buildings and bunkers, as well as the launch pads.

The Chrystal Geyser located within the base attracts many tourists.
