The greenmarket commodity exchange was part of Bayerische Börse AG. Greenmarket was founded in September 2009 for trading in emission allowances ( CO 2 certificates ) - European Union Allowances (EUAs) and Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). Bayerische Börse AG ended trading in CO 2 emission certificates on June 30, 2012 . The volumes traded on European stock exchanges had fallen dramatically to almost zero. Emissions trading lacked the prerequisites for liquid exchange trading. The reasons for this ranged from damage to the company's image through stolen emissions certificates and VAT fraud to oversupply through largely free certificates and the resulting expiration of prices.
