Gregory Hutchinson (Classical Philologist)

Gregory Owen Hutchinson (born December 5, 1957 in London Borough of Hackney ) is a British Graecist and Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford University .

Life

He was taught at the City of London School. He had received one of the vacancies funded by the Inner London Education Authority. He studied classics at Balliol College , Oxford and graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He stayed with Balliol to do postgraduate research and completed his PhD in Philosophy ( DPhil ) in 1983 . His doctoral thesis was entitled Aeschylus : Septem Contra Thebas: Text and commentary . In 1979, Hutchinson married Yvonne Downing. They have a daughter together.

From 1981 to 1984 Hutchinson taught as a PhD student at Christ Church in Oxford. In 1984 he was elected a Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. From 1984 to 2015 he was a tutor for classics in Exeter. From 1996 to 1998 he was also a reader in Classical Literature at the Faculty of Classics. From 1998 to 2015 he was also Professor of Greek and Latin Languages ​​and Literature at Oxford University.
