Boundary layer
Boundary layer ( English boundary layer ), the edge layer in a fluid , in which the wall exerts an influence.
One differentiates:
- the fluid dynamic boundary layer of a flowing fluid, the speed of which is influenced by the friction at a solid or fluid boundary surface,
- the thermal boundary layer of a fluid, the temperature of which is influenced by that of a solid or liquid boundary, and
- the concentration boundary layer , in which the concentration of a solid, liquid or gaseous body in a solution is influenced.
All three boundary layers can, but do not have to, occur simultaneously in a solid-fluid system; accordingly, they differ both geometrically and in their unsteady behavior.
