Greek Gospel of Egypt
The apocryphal Gospel of Egypt probably originated in the first half of the 2nd century . The name and usage indicate an Egyptian origin. The fragments that have survived in Greek do not allow any information about its structure and content. Two of the few sources are Clement of Alexandria and Origen , who both knew the Gospel of Egypt and quoted from it - especially on emerging questions of general sexual abstinence and celibacy, for which the Encratites invoked the Gospel of Egypt.
The Gospel is not to be confused with the later Gnostic , Coptic Gospel of Egypt , which is handed down in the Nag Hammadi writings in Coptic language .
