Steppe cricket ( Gryllus assimilis )

The Grigfarm Rotter GmbH was a Swiss operation for breeding feeding insects , especially crickets . The word “grig” is an older English word for “cricket”, but it can also mean “happy fellow” and “good person”. The offer is increasingly aimed at terrarium keepers who keep reptiles and amphibians .

The Grigfarm was founded in 1969 by the Czech herpetologist Jiři Rotter (1930-2009) as Grigfarm, J. Rotter & Co. after he fled to Switzerland in 1968 after the crackdown on the Prague Spring . It was the first large-scale breeding company for feed insects that reliably delivered live feed animals. The initial offer consisted of crickets ( Acheta domesticus ), steppe crickets ( Gryllus assimilis ), short-winged crickets ( Grillodes sigillatus ) and two- spot crickets ( Gryllus bimaculatus ). The first major customers were the Frankfurt Zoological Garden , Basel Zoo and Zurich Zoo , with individual consignments going to Asia .

With the Grigfarm, crickets were established as the most important feed animals for insectivorous pets, after other feed animals such as mealworms ( Tenebrio molitor ), which have less favorable nutrient ratios (for example the ratio of calcium : phosphorus ), were fed . In 1990 the Grigfarm sold around 10.5 million insects. In May 2008, Jiři Rotter handed over the management of the company to his wife Ruzena Rotter, after which the company was continued as Grigfarm Rotter . 2010 run as a sole proprietorship was Grigfarm Rotter into a GmbH converted and the range with larvae of the owls spider Butterfly ( Chilcomadia moorei ), nightcrawlers ( Lumbricus terrestris ), wax worms ( Galleria mellonella ), mealworms and larvae of the gold fly ( "pinkies," Lucilia sericata ) extended .

In 2011 the grig farm was closed.
