The Great Mosque of Durrës or New Mosque ( Albanian  Xhamia e Madhe e Durrësit or Xhamia e Re ) is the largest mosque in the Albanian port city of Durrës . It is located on the main square, slightly elevated on the slope of a hill.

The previous Ottoman building

At the site of today's mosque there was a previous building during the Ottoman period . The Great Mosque of Durrës was built with financial help in particular from Ymer Lushkaj during the reign of King Ahmet Zogu . Other sources name citizens and traders of the city as “helpers”. The year 1931 is given as the start of construction. The idea for the construction came from the local Mufti Mustafa Varoshi, who also bought the wallpaper for the mosque from Persia . There are different details about the opening: The years 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1940 are given. When it opened, it was the largest mosque in Albania.

The mosque was closed after the ban on religion in 1967 and converted into a youth culture center. The minaret was removed. In 1979 the building was damaged by an earthquake . In 1993 the mosque was reopened with the help of the World Islamic Aid Organization and restored the following year. The building was renovated in 2003 and 2013.

With the large dome and the narrow minaret, it is a mosque in the Turkish style. The building has an area of 1319 square meters. A second minaret was planned, but it was never completed.

In addition to the Great Mosque and new buildings, there is also the old and small mosque in Durrës : the Fatih Mosque from the early 16th century.
