Orangery

The Great Orangery at Charlottenburg Palace is a listed building in Berlin-Charlottenburg . The orangery building was used to overwinter the non-winter-hardy potted plants from the castle park , including orange , lemon and bitter orange trees . When it was vacant in summer, it was used to hold court parties.

history

The Great Orangery was built between 1709 and 1712 under the direction of Eosander von Göthe , at the same time as the reconstruction of the central risalite and the dome of the palace. This work was planned while Sophie Charlotte was still alive , but was only carried out after her death. A planned counterpart on the east side was not realized. In its place, Frederick II had the New Wing , today the Knobelsdorff Wing, built.

In 1943 the orangery and the castle itself were badly damaged, but were rebuilt true to the original after the Second World War . Today it is used for events.
