The (New) Universum , opened in 1843, was an amusement park in the former location of Zwischenbrücken in the area of the unregulated Danube near Vienna . The area was incorporated into Vienna in 1850 as part of Vienna's 2nd district, Leopoldstadt , and has been part of the 20th district, Brigittenau , since 1900 . The amusement facility was located northwest of today's Taborstrasse , which was not initially routed there at the time , approximately opposite the confluence of today's Schweidlgasse, on the edge of an alluvial forest called Taborhaufen not far from the arm of the Danube known as Kaiserwasser.

The "Universe" was on the edge of the alluvial forest in an extension of Taborstrasse (in the section above left).

The establishment was set up in 1842/43 by the architect Carl Hör ( Czeike erroneously stated 1834), who ran the “Colosseum” in Brigittenau until 1842 , and was very popular. On contemporary lithographs you can see the entrance portal with an obelisk and flagpole, as amusement facilities a “spiral machine” and a “Russian sling”, a “Salon d'artiste” and the amusements “Turks Throwing” and “Ring Throwing” as well as a “travel cabinet” "And a" dance pavilion ".

The system stood directly on the flagpole water

After Carl Hör's death in 1850, his widow Theresia Hör ran the "Universe" until 1865. In the revolution of 1848 and in 1866, the "Universe" fell victim to fires, but was rebuilt both times. In 1870 it had to be demolished because it was in the way of the southern part of the north-west station area .

In 1896, the Universumstrasse was named after the former amusement park along the northeastern part of the (now former) Nordwestbahnhof (about 1 km from the historical location of the establishment) .

Errors

In the literature of the district history one often finds the mistake to this day that the “Universum” was previously called “Colosseum” (in fact, only the operator, Carl Hör , was the same, but the location was not). In addition, the opening year of the “Universe” is often quoted as 1834 (the year in which Hör bought the later “Colosseum” area). Occasionally, it is also suggested that the two establishments existed simultaneously for a while (in fact, the “Universe” was only opened after the “Colosseum” was closed).
