The Great Synagogue 1902

The Great Synagogue Rabbi Bloch ( French Synagoge d'Alger ) was a historically significant synagogue in Algiers , the capital of Algeria ; after the Algerian Jews were expelled , it was converted into a mosque. Located on Randon Street, it was the main synagogue of Algeria's Jewish community for many years.

The Great Synagogue was built from bricks in 1865 in the style of the surrounding mosques. During the Algerian War, the synagogue was set on fire in July 1960, set on fire, and numerous Jews were killed. On December 11th, the synagogue was attacked again by an Arab mob, and the Torah scrolls and the prayer books were desecrated. After the Jews were forcibly evicted from the city and left for Israel , France and the United States , the building was finally closed and then abandoned.

In 1962 the Great Synagogue was transformed into the “Abu Farès Mosque” ( Arabic جامع اليهود Djamâa Lihoud ) or “Ibn Fares Mosque” ( Algerian Arabic Djamâa Ben farès ).
