Grand Ducal Hessian Merit Medal 1889–1894

The Grand Ducal Hessian Medal of Merit for Science, Art, Industry and Agriculture was awarded on May 31, 1853 by Grand Duke Ludwig III. donated. After the wearer's death, the medals had to be returned.

It was awarded in gold and silver. The design comes from the court medalist Carl Friedrich Voigt

The obverse initially showed a portrait of the Grand Duke looking to the left. His successor Ludwig IV replaced this on June 8, 1889 with his own. His successor Ernst Ludwig was also shown there in 1894.

The reverse shows a wreath tied with a double bow. The wreath shows laurel leaves on the left and oak leaves in 7 groups of leaves on the right. In the center is the two-line font Dem Merit .

The biggest change took place on June 4, 1904. From this point on, two medals were awarded. One each for art and science and one for agriculture and trade.
