The great guild of Memmingen

The large guild is a building in the Upper Swabian former Free Imperial City of Memmingen . It closes off the market square to the east and thus sets a strong urban development aspect.

Importance of the house

The patricians belonged to the great guild, and after the guild revolution in 1347 they formed their own guild, or, more precisely, the patrician society. Because of the wealth that they brought to the city, they were the most powerful guild in the former Free Imperial City . The Small Council , also known as the Privy Council or Hare Council , was introduced into the city in 1551 by Emperor Charles V. He consolidated the previously prevailing supremacy of the patricians in political events by the fact that the patrician class always made up the majority. It determined which political, cultural and economic direction the city took. After the mediatization of the imperial city, the Noble Society of the Golden Lion lost its supremacy.

history

The first drinking room of the wealthy Memmingen merchants was built on this site in 1453 after the patricians had founded their own guild after the guild revolution. From 1718 to 1719 it had to give way to the new building. The building served as a meeting place and ballroom for the patricians and nobles of the city and the surrounding area. After the city became Bavarian in 1804 and the associated dissolution of the guilds, the Society for the Golden Lion was also dissolved. In 1834 the city acquired the house and housed various offices and authorities there. Around 1950 the house housed the city museum, today the passport, foreigner, residents' registration and registry offices are located there. Weddings are held in the neighboring Memmingen town hall .
