Bullhead Building

The Bullhead Building is a West , Texas building that was added to the Texas Historic Landmarks list in 1983.

The building was erected in 1892 by August Groppe (1840-1919), who was born in Verliehausen, Kingdom of Hanover and who emigrated to the United States in 1867 , as the first brick building in the business district of West, Texas. Groppe bought the property for $ 1,000 and used locally made bricks worth $ 1,747.50. The receipts for this are issued on site today. He hired local masons for the construction work.

From 1893 to 1905, the E. G. Blume and Brother General Merchandise Store was located in the Groppe Building, which was run by E. G. and Henry Blume, Groppes' nephews. After that, it was used by various stores such as a haberdashery, grocery store and pharmacy. In 1982 work began on restoring the building to its original state. The original masonry , over which different layers of paint had been laid over the years, was exposed. During the renovation work, a well was uncovered that had existed before the Groppe Building was built. This well, approximately 12 m (40 feet ) deep, was in use until the West Water Company opened .
