West is a city in McLennan County in the US state of Texas in the United States of America . It has 2,674 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
West is located at latitude 31 ° 48'12 "N and longitude 97 ° 5'35" W. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 4.0 km². West is about 40 km north of Waco and 120 km south of Dallas . Most of the city is also on the east side of Interstate 35 and the Union Pacific Railroad .
history
West was settled from 1840 and was named a city in 1892. It was named after the landowner of the same name, Thomas West (1834–1912).
The city is five kilometers south of the place where the Crush railway accident was staged in 1896 .
On February 15, 2009, the Ash Creek meteorite fall occurred near the city.
Every year, the West Festival of the large Czech community takes place in West .
On the evening of April 17, 2013, a particularly severe explosion occurred in the fertilizer warehouse of the West Fertilizer Company . 15 people died and around 200 were injured in the explosion. The explosion destroyed a large part of the small town, around 60 to 80 buildings were destroyed or damaged. An elementary school and the West Middle School were almost completely destroyed. Most of the victims were firefighters and volunteers who came to the aid of the people. On May 11, 2016, the investigative authority BATF announced that the explosion had been caused intentionally.

The city is part of the West Independent School District with West High School and its athletics team, the Trojans. West Middle School exploded due to a gas leak as a result of the explosion in the fertilizer store.
