Grubenfeuer is a spicy herbal schnapps with 60% alcohol by volume, made from various herbs and fruits.
The drink is only produced in Schlettau in the Ore Mountains and is therefore hardly known outside of Saxony . The sugar content and the fact that the brew is served burning (warm) mask the high alcohol content. This makes it very tasty even for people who are not schnapps lovers. Pit fire is usually served in small, clay pans, lit and put out again at the desired temperature.
