Depiction of the mine service badge in the 57 version

The mine service badge was a state award of the German Reich for merited miners or members of a mine service . It was donated by Adolf Hitler on January 30, 1938 ; the design for the medal came from the graphic artist and caricaturist Professor Hans Schweitzer .

prehistory

Mine rescue men in Germany have already been recognized for their achievements, although this mostly happened at the state level and in a wide variety of ways. For example, on April 17, 1934, the Prussian Minister of Economics donated its own award (the mine commemorative badge of the Free State of Prussia ). On November 13, 1936, the Reichsgrubenwehr badge of honor was introduced , which was awarded uniformly throughout Germany by the Reich Minister of Economics. At the beginning of 1938, Hitler converted this award into a badge of honor awarded "in the name of the Führer" with a different appearance. With the creation of a new mine service badge on January 30, 1938, the granting of the Reichsgrubenwehr badge was prohibited. The full wording of the ordinance in the Reichsgesetzblatt Part I, page 83 of January 30, 1938 reads:

Ordinance on the award of the Mine Rescue Decoration

On the basis of § 3 of the law on titles, medals and decorations of July 1, 1937 (Reichsgesetzblatt Part I, page 725) I prescribe:

  • § 1: As recognition for services to the mine rescue service, I award the mine rescue honor badge.
  • § 2: The Mine Rescue Decoration is awarded:
    • 1. to members of a mine rescue service who have served in a mine rescue service for fifteen years without reproach;
    • 2. to members of a mine rescue service with a shorter period of service if they have to leave the service of the service due to an accident;
    • 3. To members of a mine rescue service or other miners for particularly courageous and determined behavior in the service of the defense or rescue work.
  • § 3: The mine guard's badge of honor consists of a silver medal with the emblem of the Reich in front of a crossed mallet and iron on the front, and the inscription for merit in the mine guard on the back . It is worn on the orange, black edged and white lined ribbon in the buttonhole or on the medal buckle on the left side of the chest. If the mine rescue honor badge is worn on the medal buckle, it must be affixed to the place prescribed for state service awards.
  • § 4: The entrusted person receives an award certificate about the award of the mine rescue honor. The state minister and head of the presidential chancellery issued the certificate of the award of the honorary mark on my behalf.
  • § 5: The mine guard's badge of honor becomes the property of the borrower. His surviving dependents are not obliged to return them.
  • Section 6: The provisions on the creation and awarding of a Reichsgrubenwehr honorary mark of November 13, 1936 (Deutscher Reichsanzeiger and Prussian State Gazette No. 270) are repealed.
  • § 7: I will issue the implementing regulations.
